Layout
The layout of this poster has almost been divided in half, showing him and his reflection. This suggests the idea that there is now two sides to Spiderman, and that he is equally divided between them. We can also see the city in the background which sets the scene for the film, and also places Spiderman in the place where the audience recognises him to be. The text "the battle within" has been placed cleverly on the line between The sky and the reflection so the "within" part is on the reflection. This suggests this alternative reflection is within him, and it is something he can't control. The "3" in the recognisable spiderman type face in also on this diagonal line that runs down the poster. Colours
The bright reds and blues of spiderman's suit which we recognise as "hero" colours (for example these are also the colours of superman and wonderwoman's suits) are contrasted with the black suit in his reflection, which we associate with evil. This again suggests to the audience a multiple personality and that spiderman has an alternative side. The colours surrounding spiderman are quite dark, but behind him the yellow from the sun is shining through the clopuds, which gives a sort of sense of foreboding, as if something is rising. These warm colours over the city look as if there is fire or an explosion, which suggests chaos and destruction.
Image
The image is just of spiderman because he is the main character. A small amount of the plot is given away through the image, because we can see that spiderman's reflection is the oppostie to him, although we are not told anything about how or what happens. Spiderman is looking straight out to the audience in the image, so it is very direct towards the audience. The image is at angle which perhaps suggests disorientation, but most likely the fact there is often strange angles in the film because of the way spiderman moves throughout the film. The angle also makes the composition more interesting due to the way it is divided diagonally from the reflection. Spiderman has his back to his reflection, like he doesnt see it or is perhaps trying to turn away from it. I like the way he has been reflected so the audience can tell it's him, but clearly from his suit they can tell something else is happening.
Text
There is a short tag line of text at the top of the poster "the battle within". This links in well with the image and again is usggesting to the audience part of the plot, without giving vital parts away. This is telling them that the battle is within spiderman, and that there is a war between himself, which is exciting as spiderman has only been seen as a hero throughout both of the first two films. The text is in a thin, slightly italic, sans-serif type face which is all in capitals. It is the same type face used throughout all the spiderman films. The full title of the film is not stated, just "3" in the iconic spiderman type face. Because spiderman is so recognisable and there has already been two films before this one, the audience know that this is the advertisment for Spiderman 3. The 3 seems to be more powerful as it is so short yet so meaningful. The type face used is the same sans-serif type face used for the tag line, except it is much bolder. It has also been given a metallic effect, so it looks like the logo on Spiderman's suit. The institutional references are in red at the bottom of the poster, which fits in well with the colour scheme but I dont think it works that well because you can't see them that clearly, although this isnt the most important part of the poster.
Institutional References
The institutional references are displayed at the bottom of the poster. They are alot smaller compared to the other text because they are not vital to the audience. Marvel has been included, as Spiderman originated from Marvel comics. This appeals to comic book fans and also suggests to the audience the film is good because they may have seen other succesful Marvel films. Interestingly I also noticed that the sony website has been included with "/spiderman" on the end of the URL. This means it is perhaps a sponsor, which advertises sony and also gives the audience a website to get information about the film.
Mise-en-scene
The mise-en-scene of the poster clearly shows the audience it is a spiderman film. Spiderman is an iconic character, so the audience are likely to recognise him straight away. We can tell it is spiderman due to his suit, but in his reflection the suit is black, showing us a spiderman we don't know, which the audience may find intriguing and exciting. In the background we can see tall buildings, so we can tell the film is set in a city. The audience are likely to know this is where all the spiderman films are set, so it is something they recognise within the poster. The cantrasting colours of the suits suggest two different perspectives on spiderman. From the bright red and blue the audience see this as "good" spiderman, but we associate black with death and evil, so this immediatley alarms the audience that spiderman is not himself here. Pathetic fallacy has also been used due to the fact it is raining, which the audience relate to sadness, anger, or "bad" scenes that they often see in films. The way the clouds are gathering in the aky suggests a storm is building, creating a sense of foreboding and that something is happening that will not have a good outcome.
